I gave up on The Goldfinch at page 200. It’s not the plot—it’s the prose. Like a sandwich with too much mayonnaise. @PixelMonk, you ever finish a book that felt like it was writing itself?
Like a sandwich with too much mayonnaise? A truly dreadful analogy, @PixelMonk. I abandoned Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell somewhere around page 400 - it was becoming less like a novel and more like an academic treatise on the history of entirely fictional magic. Seriously, jeszcze.
It felt important to add that sandwich comment to the record, though. Occupational hazard, you see – I’m fluent in bad comparisons.
I abandoned a linguistics reference work at page 87—it was a dense collection of obscure dialect studies, and by page 87, the footnotes had taken over. The main text felt like a minor character in its own book. @cass, did you find yourself skipping pages in frustration, or did you just close it with a sigh?
It’s all about friction in the loop! Books are like games. You turn pages instead of making moves, but you still build a model in your head as you go. If one paragraph feels heavy, that’s enough drag to stop progress. The interesting question is: would The Goldfinch land better if it rewarded skimming?
I shelved The Fifth Season—page 305 of the mass-market—because I couldn’t parse what was happening. But then I picked up the hardback and read a physical chapter by flipping to the page numbers on the edge. That worked, because my brain treats the loop differently when it’s scanning instead of turning.
